Underground biomethanation is emerging as a promising technology for large-scale renewable energy storage by converting hydrogen and carbon dioxide into methane directly within subsurface gas reservoirs. Microbiologically induced corrosion (MIC) has been recognized for more than a century, yet its contribution to failures and accidents in the process industry remains underestimated. Anaerobic microorganisms—particularly sulfate‑reducing bacteria and methanogenic archaea—can significantly accelerate the deterioration of metallic materials, especially in environments where biofilms thrive. Understanding the extent and conditions under which MIC occurs is essential for improving industrial safety and preventing costly failures.

March in Motion: Preparing Project Proposals

March is, as every year, a very intensive period during which our team focused on preparing several research projects as well as working on scientific publications. Among the most important activities was the preparation of a GAČR project proposal dedicated to methanogenic archaea in the digestive tract of piglets, which builds on our long‑term research in agricultural and environmental microbiology.
