Healthy Buildings Europe 2025 (HB2025) conference

8 Jun 2025

As part of this premier international forum on indoor environmental quality and building sustainability, we presented our ongoing research focused on microbial contamination in ventilation systems. Our work investigates how biofilms and microbial communities develop within HVAC systems and the potential health risks they pose, particularly in energy-efficient buildings with limited natural ventilation. At HB2025, we shared findings on the diversity and resistance of microorganisms isolated from ventilation ducts, as well as methods for monitoring, mitigating, and preventing microbial buildup. Through this platform, we engaged with experts in building science, environmental microbiology, and public health, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary approaches to ensure healthy indoor air quality. Our participation reinforced our lab’s commitment to improving microbial safety in built environments.
