Laboratory of Anaerobic Microorganisms

Kushkevych Lab

We engineer bacteria and their metabolic pathways for biotechnology and educate new generations of microbiologists/biotechnologists at Masaryk University. Our long-term ambition is to link microbiology with molecular biology, biochemistry, and bioinformatics, and work on interdisciplinary projects that contribute to the basic knowledge of studied systems but also have significant application potential.

Sulfate-reducing bacteria from various biotopes

  • Isolation from intestines (biopsies) and feces of healthy and patients with colitis,
    • people; rats; mice; horses, etc.,
    • the environment from anoxic zones of soil, water, sediments.
  • Study and comparation of the physiological and biochemical properties of new bacterial isolates,
  • Investigation of the process of sulfate reduction in human intestine, the mechanisms and causes of ulcerative colitis.

Phototrophic anoxygenic purple and green sulfur bacteria of the Chromatiaceae and Chlorobiaceae families

  • Phototrophic anoxygenic sulfur bacteria and the influence of different light intensities on their growth,
  • Study of various environmental factors and their effect on the growth of anoxygenic phototrophic bacteria,
  • Detoxications of hydrogen sulphide and its mechanisms applying anoxygenic phototrophs.
